SKF flanged stainless steel bearings are available in an open design, designation suffix R and a shielded version, with a Z shield at both sides, designation suffix 2ZR 

The bearings have the same internal design, including the cage, as the corresponding bearings without flange. They are able to accommodate the same loads, operate at the same speeds, and the shielded bearings are filled with the same grease.

Flange bearings, also called flanged ball bearings are used when a shaft axis is perpendicular to the bearing mounting surface. Available in 2, 3, or 4-hole options, Flange bearing offers a method of precise mounting fits and load support. 2-bolt flanged ball bearings have a diamond shaped flange with 2 mounting holes. Almost all 3-bolt flanged ball bearings have a rounded mounting flange with three, equally spaced mounting holes. Other hole designs, such as an offset pattern, are also obtainable. 4-bolt flanged ball bearings have a square or round mounting flange with four mounting holes. Selection of the appropriate timken bearing can be completed with knowledge of the shaft size and radial and thrust load requirements. 

Bearing type choices for Flange bearings include ball bearing, needle roller bearing, plain bearing, and roller bearing. In a roller bearing the rolling element is a ball. Ball bearings are used to provide smooth, low friction motion in rotary applications. Construction is composed of an inner and outer ring, balls, and usually a cage or ball separator. In a needle roller bearing the rolling element is a needle roller. Needle roller bearings are developed for radial load applications where a low profile is desired. Bushings / ntn bearings, also known as journal or plain bearings, are employed to constrain, guide, or reduce friction in rotary or linear applications. They work by way of sliding action instead of the rolling action utilized by ball, roller and needle bearings.

As in all of the bearings, proper lubrication is needed to reduce wear and friction. Terms for example fluid film, self-lubricated, hydrostatic, and hydrodynamic are normally designations for plain bearings. In a roller bearing the rolling element is often a roller.
